KoZak’s Laketown Grill Still Thriving in Smithville After More Than a Decade

Nestled in a strip center off Highway 169, KoZak’s Laketown Grill has become a cornerstone of the Smithville dining scene since opening in 2013. What began as a family passion project has evolved into a beloved community hub, offering creative twists on Southern-style comfort food.

Founded by Brian and Jacquie Hove, the restaurant draws its name from their sons, Kobe and Zach. Chef Brian honed his culinary expertise over a long tenure with Marriott Hotels, working his way up the ranks from prep cook to executive sous-chef, before turning to entrepreneurship in 2013.

KoZak’s is dedicated to maintaining a local restaurant that consistently delivers affordable, made-from-scratch, and uniquely presented American cuisine. The menu reflects Hove’s expertise and flair—items like Kansas City Steak Soup, porterhouse pork chop with bourbon-glazed apples and onions, and smoked brisket grilled cheese testify to a marriage of classic technique and regional inspiration.

KoZak’s places strong emphasis on local sourcing. Fresh produce comes from area farms, meats from Paradise Locker Meats, and partnerships include local wineries and breweries like Ladoga Ridge and Levi Garrison & Sons.

Diners describe the food as inventive, hearty, and reliable. Standout dishes include Asian BBQ pulled-pork nachos, fried green tomatoes, Cajun pasta, the salmon BLT, and a rotating selection of desserts—from gooey butter cake to key-lime pie.

In May 2024, Smithville’s Board of Aldermen awarded a liquor license not only to KoZak’s Laketown Grill, but also to its sister venue, Grassroots Garden Lounge, located downtown, signaling growth and diversification for the brand. The second location in historic downtown Smithville offers small plates as well as upscale cocktails in a sophisticated but relaxing space.

What began as a family-run kitchen has matured into more than just a restaurant; it’s become a gathering place for locals and visitors alike, offering comfort food with flair, rooted in local partnerships and community pride.

KoZak’s is located at 1018 S. 169 Hwy in Smithville and is open from 11 am – 9 pm Tuesday through Thursday and 11 am – 10 pm Friday and Saturday.
