Old Cookstove Changes Hands, New Owners Aim to Build on Local Legacy

After nearly two decades as a local favorite for fresh coffee, baked goods, and pantry staples, the Old Cookstove is officially changing hands, ushering in a new chapter for the beloved community business. Located in Maysville, the Old Cookstove has long served as a coffee shop, deli, bakery, and bulk food store, drawing both residents and visitors seeking handcrafted sandwiches, specialty coffee, and sustainably sourced bulk items. Known for its welcoming atmosphere and commitment to quality, the business has become a gathering place in northwest Missouri.

The previous owners, who built the business into a well-loved local hub over many years, will soon finalize the sale to Barb and Les Denny, who are enthusiastic about continuing and expanding the store’s community presence. With its ovens fired up early each morning and shelves stocked with pantry staples, the Old Cookstove is poised to retain its role as a neighborhood meeting spot and a destination for fresh-baked goods, specialty beverages, and bulk groceries.

Barb Denny shares that, “If you’d ask me three months ago if we would own the Old Cookstove, I would’ve told you you were absolutely crazy! But the thought of losing a beloved community business where we regularly visited would be heartbreaking. It’s just been such a large part of our life.”

Denny emphasizes their gratitude for community support as they work to keep the beloved local business going. With that in mind, she says they are preserving the core elements before exploring a few new opportunities. “Right now, we don’t plan on changing anything. What they are doing has worked so well for so long; why mess it up? Once we get a handle on what we’re doing, I expect you might see a few additional products, and maybe we’ll start doing some cooking classes. We definitely have the best bakers around who could teach the classes!”

With its deep roots in the region and a fresh team at the helm, the Old Cookstove is expected to remain a staple of Maysville’s small-town charm for years to come.
