Nature and History Meet at Watkins Woolen Mill State Park and State Historic Site
Are you interested in hiking and Missouri history? Watkins Woolen Mill State Park and State Historic Site, located near Lawson, Missouri, is the perfect place to enjoy both.
The park boasts a 100-acre lake with a paved path circling it, perfect for hiking and biking. The lake offers great bass, catfish, sunfish, and crappie fishing. And after the poles are packed away, visitors can lounge on the swim beach. The lake has a courtesy boat dock, a paved boat ramp, and a sand ramp for launching kayaks. There are many picnic spots around it with barbecue grills where visitors can watch white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and other native birds and animals.
The park also has a wonderful campground. The campground has 96 sites, including 74 with electric hookups. Some sites are available for walk-in visitors year-round, and the campsite is fully-reservable from April 15 – October 31.
Watkins Woolen Mill State Park is adjacent to Watkins Woolen Mill State Historic Site, a National Historic Landmark.
Guests of the historic site can tour both Watkins Mill and the Watkins family home. Tours of the Mill include the engine shed, three floors of the mill with its original machinery, the gristmill, and the mill store. Watkins Mill is the only 19th-century textile mill in the United States where you can see the original machinery just as it was more than 100 years ago. Tours of the home include the dairy cellar, summer kitchen, icehouse, smokehouse, fruit dry house, garden, poultry coops, and beehives. The mill and the Watkins family home were built with handmade bricks, and wood cut right from their own land. Guests can also tour the museum and find local treasures at the souvenir shop located inside the visitor center.
The site also preserves the Watkins farmstead. Visiting this living history farm gives guests a snapshot of 19th-century agriculture, technology, and family life. The gardens and orchards include heirloom plants and seeds in addition to several livestock breeds.
As temperatures start to warm back up, consider making a trip to this gem of a park. Whether you are interested in relaxing, exercising, or learning about area history, Watkins Mill has you covered.

The Fulfillment House began in 2018 as a passion project for two local business owners as one of their sons with Down Syndrome was navigating the often-difficult transition to life after high school. They saw the potential to take an existing business need and transform it into an enriching employment opportunity for adults with special needs.
