HIVE Coffee & Café Creates Buzz in Saint Joseph
by Julia McDowell
The HIVE is creating a buzz as the new but familiar breakfast spot in St. Joseph. It has proudly partnered with local favorites Mokaska Coffee Shop and Tracy McCrae. Specialty coffee, tea, and breakfast bites, including cinnamon rolls, biscuits and gravy, and quiche, are served daily. Cinnamon rolls sell out quickly, but large orders can be placed by calling ahead.
InterServ may be well known now for its Summer Jam/Spike leagues and the Meals on Wheels program, but decades ago, in the ‘40s, ’50s, and ‘60s, InterServ was well known for its inclusive and interactive senior citizens club called The BEE HIVE. As a Social entrepreneurship project, InterServ has brought back The HIVE in the form of a coffee shop.
In addition to providing a community gathering space and bringing more people into the building, The HIVE Coffee & Café is generating revenue for the organization. All proceeds from the café and coffee shop are donated to help fund InterServ programming. Funds will hopefully help shorten the wait time for those on the list for the mobile meals program and fund youth programming that helps kids develop into productive and socially conscious adults..
InterServ Community Center has provided social services to the St. Joseph, Mo. community for over 100 years. Although programs and services have evolved, InterServ continues to ensure that all people have access to the resources they need to experience a full life.
Located in the commons area of the InterServ Community Center at 5400 King Hill Ave, The HIVE Coffee & Café is open Monday through Friday, 7 am to noon. You can like and follow The BEE HIVE on Facebook for daily specials and future announcements, such as box lunch catering services, which are coming soon!

The Fulfillment House began in 2018 as a passion project for two local business owners as one of their sons with Down Syndrome was navigating the often-difficult transition to life after high school. They saw the potential to take an existing business need and transform it into an enriching employment opportunity for adults with special needs.
