Horses have the power to help us heal and grow. The research tells us this, and the stories confirm it.
“It’s a place that makes (riders) happy,” says Shaney Othic, the executive director of Northland Therapeutic Riding Center (NTRC).

Located on 32 beautiful acres in Holt, Mo., NTRC provides equine-assisted therapies and activities for individuals with physical, psychological, and behavioral challenges. It is a PATH premier accredited center and the only one in the Kansas City, Mo. area, ensuring that it meets the highest safety standards and follows the best practices in the industry. Equine-assisted activities help individuals with special needs gain confidence, physical and emotional strength, independence, and mobility.

Eighty or more riders and their families visit NTRC each week. Children as young as four can ride through the program, and there is no maximum age limit. Riders who start as young children and are still active as young adults build confidence and skills year after year.

There are many opportunities to get involved. Volunteers donate thousands of hours yearly, helping with everything from office work to event planning and leading horses. Kids can start volunteering at 14; if the whole family participates, it’s a great way to spend time together. For those interested in helping financially, NTRC is a recognized 501(c)3 non-profit organization. One-time or ongoing donations help sponsor horses, events, or other activities. People can also donate through the United Way’s charitable giving program and other employer gift and volunteer hours matching programs.

Capital Improvements

In addition to its usual needs, NTRC is fundraising for capital improvements through its Full Circle Campaign. The campaign aims to construct an Education and Community Center facility for therapy participants, families, and surrounding communities and provide therapy access to more individuals. The center completed its barn enclosure project earlier this year through the campaign, allowing participants to ride all year. Before the barn was enclosed, mid-March to mid-November was the riding season. Now, participants can mount up for mental, physical, and emotional health all year long.

Investing in Yourself and Others

Donating time, talents, or money to NTRC and its riders is a wonderful opportunity and an investment in those who can benefit from the center’s therapies. And for those who benefit, Othic says, “It makes them feel important. They feel seen, and they feel empowered. I just think it’s a special place everybody should visit.”
